We’re increasingly attentive to the many faces of depression and anxiety, and we’re fluent in the languages of psychology and medication. But depression is profound spiritual territory; and that is much harder to speak about. This is an On Being classic. Krista opens up about her own experience of depression and talks with Parker Palmer, Anita Barrows, and Andrew Solomon.
We are putting this out on the air again because people tell us it has saved lives,
and so many of us are struggling in whole new ways right now.

Listen to Cameron Gordon on The IMPERFECT Podcast

Toxic masculinity comes in many forms: there is co-dependency, abuse (in any form), assault, violence and more. In this episode with Cameron, we deconstruct the generational traumas that have been created by toxic masculinity - both in this personal life and society at large - and how to have conversations about it.

Cameron does some great work in Human Performance Theory and consults and coaches clients in the realm of Toxic Masculinity. He speaks to and teaches businesses, teams and individuals on the powerful rewards that happen when we understand and change our approach to masculinity in our culture, community and personal life.

The Tree Poster

At the start of World War 1, a young man left his bicycle by a tree in his hometown and then enlisted to fight the War. He died. Over the century, the tree absorbed his bike to create this iconic image.

Like this picture, many people today have a trauma, abuse or poor treatment that they have left behind - but - like the tree and bike - their subconscious mind hasn’t forgotten. This ‘stuff’ from the past unfortunately informs our present reality and can push us into behaviour we know is unhealthy, unhelpful and painful for all concerned. By recognizing our individual pasts, and facing our internal pain, we can become more and more aware of how our actions in the present stem from this past trauma. The result? A stronger awareness of what is actually causing our actions in the moment and more control over our actions which can lead to more joy and peace in our lives, now.

It is well known that Pleasure comes from outside of yourself and that JOY comes from within. This is an important thing to understand. Through an honest and authentic reflection on your past, your habits and your emotions, everyone (young and old) can grow and heal from the pain of our past and learn to understand our triggers and emotional reactions resulting from the trauma we were exposed to throughout our lives.
